Position: Low Strings Teaching Artist

Site: Carver Elementary, 6160 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA

Status: Part-time (salaried)

Pay: Starting at $6,500 (yearly step raises); private lesson opportunities available

Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday — 3:45 PM – 6:15 PM (Sept–May)

Start: September

Reports to: Carver Program Manager

Position summary
Teach Level 2–4 cello and string bass students (beginner → intermediate/advanced). You will model high musicianship, teach technique and ensemble skills, prepare repertoire and performances, and build strong relationships with students and families. The Low Strings Teaching Artist will bring both musical excellence and a deep commitment to the growth of young people. This role is ideal for a musician who thrives in a collaborative, community-centered environment and sees teaching as a way to inspire confidence, curiosity, and connection in students. This role requires collaboration with teaching artists, participation in professional learning, and occasional evenings/weekends for performances or events.

Core responsibilities

  • Teach cello/string bass technique and ensemble rehearsal for Levels 2–4
  • Prepare age-appropriate repertoire and lead students to performance readiness
  • Perform with/for students to model artistry and inspire learning
  • Maintain a structured, inclusive classroom and support daily transitions
  • Track student progress and communicate with families about achievements
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and program planning
  • Attend required performances, field trips, and occasional weekend/evening events
  • Collaborate with colleagues to strengthen curriculum and student outcomes
  • Complete administrative tasks and maintain accurate records

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years experience in string pedagogy and performance (cello or bass preferred)
  • Strong musicianship and demonstrated success teaching young ensembles
  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills with students, families, and staff
  • Organized, reliable, and adaptable in a dynamic after-school setting
  • Comfortable with Google Drive/Docs/Sheets/Classroom; reliable transportation
  • Employment contingent on background check; finalists will teach/perform on principal instrument during interview
